Dr. Michael Chen joined Roberts Wesleyan University in July 2018 and is the Professor of Accounting & Business Analytics. He holds a Ph.D. in Accounting as well as several professional certifications (US CIA/CISA, China CPA).
He brings together three core passions: accounting, technology, and faith. With over 15 years of experience in Big 4 accounting firms and a deep commitment to Christian liberal arts education, he is a strong advocate of connecting faith and business. He has worked as an independent advisor and has been invited to speak in both the US and China regarding the future of work and its impact on business education and learning. He also has over 10 years of part-time teaching experience, working in universities as well as providing internal training to numerous professional organizations. He brings a unique combination of skills and knowledge to Roberts and offers a global context to the business department.
His classes are rooted in real-world insight, spiritual depth, and constant relevance. He updates course content regularly, brings market professionals into the classroom, and helps students land opportunities—from internships to full-time jobs—through his expansive industry network.
Teaching Philosophy:
Dr. Chen sees accounting not just as a profession, but as a calling. “All things hold together in Christ, even accounting,” he says, pointing to Colossians 1:17. Whether he’s discussing Peter Drucker’s view of business as a liberal art or integrating Scripture into business case studies, Michael invites students to come and learn in a Christ-centered learning environment.
Research Interests:
His research blends Scripture, strategy, and the future of work. His recent areas of interest include:
-
The future CFO as a business data architect
-
Localizing global business mindsets
-
What accountants can learn from DOGE, Elon Musk, and the evolving world of work
He’s also the mind behind the Faith Works podcast, where he explores overlooked intersections of faith, learning, and leadership.
Outside the Classroom:
Dr. Chen loves coffee runs with his wife, cheering for his kids on the baseball field and in the classroom, and catching up with colleagues over lunch. His golden doodle keeps him humble. His favorite verse is:
“Love covers, believes, hopes and endures. It never fails.” (1 Corinthians)
