Dr. Darren Lawson

It has been a delight to work with the music faculty and students here at Roberts.

The department plays such a vital outward-facing role in the local community, and I look forward to continued collaboration with them into the future.

Profile

Dr. Darren Lawson is dean emeritus of the School of Fine Arts & Communication at a nationally recognized university in Greenville, SC. For 27 years, he oversaw the university’s academic programs in art and design, music, theatre, journalism, film, and communication. In addition to his administrative responsibilities, he was the producer for all stage productions at the university.

For over 25 years, he served as producer for the university's Living Gallery presentation, which became an Upstate South Carolina Easter tradition. He was also a national award-winning stage director for the university’s musical theatre and opera productions, including Beauty and the Beast, Titanic: The Musical, A Tale of Two Cities: The Musical, Little Women: The Broadway Musical, Aida, Samson et Dalila, Il Trovatore, Mefistofele, and many others.

He was also a frequent actor in BJU’s Classic Players Association, portraying such roles as Cyrano in Cyrano de Bergerac, Leontes in The Winter’s Tale, Gloucester in King Lear, King Henry IV in Henry IV, Nick Bottom in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Jaques in As You Like It, and many more.

Darren is also a stage director for Varna International Music Academy, directing the opera Don Giovanni and the musical A Grand Night for Singing. Acting roles in the community include Mr. Badger from the musical The Wind in the Willows and Aslan in the world premiere of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

Currently, he is a communication consultant, working with universities, secondary schools, and homeschool groups on their fine arts programs.
