Adjunct Professor of American Sign Language

The Department of Language & Literature at Roberts Wesleyan University invites applications for an adjunct faculty position to teach American Sign Language I (AMSL I) during the Fall 2025 term. We are seeking a dedicated and qualified educator to provide high-quality instruction in beginner-level ASL and Deaf culture to undergraduate students.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach one section in accordance with department guidelines and course objectives.
  • Develop and deliver engaging lesson plans that promote proficiency in ASL and foster cultural understanding of the Deaf community.
  • Assess student performance through assignments, exams, and class participation.
  • Provide timely and constructive feedback to students.
  • Maintain appropriate records of student progress and submit grades in accordance with college policies.
  • Maintain current knowledge of ASL pedagogy and trends in Deaf education.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in American Sign Language, Deaf Studies, Linguistics, Education, or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
  • Demonstrated fluency in American Sign Language.
  • Experience teaching ASL at the high school or college level.
  • Knowledge of Deaf culture and the ability to integrate cultural competency into course content.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience teaching in a college or university setting.
  • Certification from a recognized body (e.g., ASLTA – American Sign Language Teachers Association).
  • Familiarity with current instructional technologies and learning management systems (e.g., Moodle).
  • Commitment to inclusive teaching practices and supporting a diverse student population.
